What do vampires and photographers have in common?

They both hate harsh sunlight.

It's the thing that every maternity and family photographer will think of first, because all we want to do is capture you and the ones you love bathed in the most beautiful light.

Many people think that plenty of sunlight will make their outdoor maternity of family portrait photography session pop, but the middle of the day is generally the worst time of day for outdoor photography. This is when the sun is its harshest, potentially causing unflattering shadows.

Yes, shade can reduce shadows, but we want mother nature to do her best work with your family, a beautiful, gentle supporting character in your photography session.

So when is the best time to schedule your outdoor photography session for best quality photography?

The Golden Hour

The Golden Hour is typically the hour just before the sun sets. The lighting is best as the sun is at its lowest point in the sky, giving us diffused light that creates the least shadows.

In Adelaide during October to March , The Golden Hour starts anywhere from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, and between April and September, The Golden Hour ranges from 4pm to 5pm.

Of course, when we start will depend on the location and what the available light is anyway. Beach locations have little shade cover which means the light is harsh until it goes down, meaning there is less time for available soft light. This is different from a botanic gardens location type location, where there will be more shade cover and therefore more time to play with.

Whatever the location, our aim is to capture you and your family in the most natural and beautiful way possible.
