You've waited nine months to meet baby and now the moment is finally here!

You don't want to miss a moment of their new life, but there is a tiny gap between the birth and visiting Impressions Photography Studio for your Newborn Photography Session.

So how do you take beautiful photos while in hospital?

Co-owner and principal photographer, Carlo Sordillo explains.

"Those first days are so precious, you just don't want to miss any of it. I certainly didn't when my two beautiful girls were born! But while I had my professional camera on me most of the time (of course!), there were times where I used the camera on my phone to capture candid moments," he said.

But whatever the equipment you have on hand, there are a few things to think about when taking good photos of your new baby in hospital.

Use natural light where possible

"I'm a big fan of photography using natural light. It's the style that we use mostly in studio because it gives the most timeless and natural feel to photography. Hospital lights can be pretty harsh, so turn them off and move the bassinet close to a window to take advantage of sunlight."

It's all in the details

"Posed photos are great, but the photos that touch your heart are about the details - those really precious moments that will make you smile for many years to come."

Here is Carlo's checklist of the things you should photograph;

  • The baby's name sign and all of the birth statistics
  • The hospital ID bracelet
  • Little hands, little feet, pretty eyelashes
  • Side profile - the shape of their little forehead, nose, lips and chin
  • Baby with each parent separately and together, and with siblings
  • Baby with grandparents and other special people
  • Photographs of their first bath.

Don't forget to incorporate special items into your photos.

Consider angles carefully

"Don't feel like you always have to get the entire baby's body in the picture. Also keep moving the camera around and keep clicking ... not every shot will be the winning shot, but you will get some good ones. Sometimes a slight change in angle will mean the difference between a baby's features looking beautiful or a bit out of proportion, so keep trying.

"One big tip - don't photograph baby from the feet up - you want to see baby's beautiful features, not up their nose!"

Give the camera to someone else

"Those tender parent and baby moments won't feel the same as a selfie, so hand the camera over to a friend or family member and let them do the hard work for you."

Include special items for added interest

"Wrap the mattress in a soft knitted blanket, add special name plates, knitted booties and beanie, or small toy for something extra. These extra touches makes for photography that's specific to you and your new baby."

Feel the best you can - IT WILL SHOW

"You've just given birth, so you shouldn't pressure yourself to do full hair and makeup. However, fresh skin and an outfit that makes you feel good will give you maximum confidence and glow you will notice in these special photos."

Find a quiet moment

"If your family is anything like mine, you're likely to have lots of visitors. Find a quiet time in the day to take your time with DIY photography, so that you don't miss the moment!"
