An unsettled newborn is the thing most parents worry about for their photography session.
We totally understand why. You want so much to capture baby in all their beauty and squishiness. And you also know the sleepless nights you and baby are having, and feel concerned that baby might not be up to a photography session.
Well, not to worry. At Impressions Photography Studio, we've photographed thousands of Adelaide babies, so we've got a few tricks up our sleeve to help baby settle as best as possible.
We keep the room warm
Our studio is kept as warm as possible to keep baby settled. Babies lose body heat very quickly, so we safely use portable heaters and air conditioning to keep baby toasty warm.
Top tip: Wear layers so that you can strip down if it gets too hot in the studio for you!
We use dummies
Even if your baby doesn't normally take a dummy, we recommend bringing one along to the session. Even if it keeps baby calm for a short while, that will assist in achieving the desired pose - it might be the difference between getting the photo right or not.
If you don't have one or forget to bring one, don't worry. We have dummies available for sale.
We wrap babY nice and snug
Good swaddling goes a long way to keeping baby calm. At Impressions Photography Studio, we use professional photography wraps for newborns underneath their decorative wrap, which are available in various sizes to suit your baby.
It's typical for babies to get a little upset when we first wrap them, but they usually settle fairly quickly once nicely wrapped.
We use white noise
Our studio is stocked with a baby shusher, which helps baby drift off to sleep. After all, shushing is the sound of being in the womb. Our handlers also rock and shush baby - you can't help but do that when you've had kids of your own!
WE hug and GEntly pat baby
Sometimes, babies just need the warmth of a hug to feel secure (and quietly, we LOVE newborn cuddles!) We also pat baby in rhythm with a heartbeat, to mimic the feeling of being in utero.
We get parents involved
We find the warm hands and familiar smell of a parent can make babies feel comforted. Besides, your involvement makes the session even more special and memorable.
WHAT YOU CAN DO BEFORE THE SESSION
Consider giving baby a bath and a massage to get them really comfy and ready for sleep. This quiet and relaxing awake time helps to set baby up for a good rest in the studio. A good feed before you leave home will help, giving baby enough time to digest and deal with any discomfort.
It's always important to remember, newborn photography is baby-led. We'll adjust the session to suit baby, taking it slow and with breaks if needed. We're patient and bring good energy to the session, because we know how clever babies are, and they can sense stress very easily.
We love photographing newborns, and we're looking forward to welcoming you into our studio.
